What is Google AI Mode?

AI Mode is Google's conversational search experience: instead of a results page with an AI summary on top, the whole interaction is an AI dialogue that searches, reasons across multiple sub-queries (query fan-out), and cites web sources inline. It rewards sites that cover a topic's full question space, not just one keyword.

Query fan-out, in plain terms

Given one question, AI Mode silently runs many related searches (subtopics, comparisons, follow-ups), gathers sources for each, and synthesizes one answer. A site that covers only the head keyword can lose the citation to a site that covers the neighboring questions too. That is why topic coverage analysis matters: you want to know which sub-questions of your money topics you have no page for.

Optimizing for AI Mode

The fundamentals are the same as the rest of AI search: quotable answers, question-shaped headings, clear entities, real authority. The AI-Mode-specific addition is breadth with structure: map the questions around each core topic and make sure each has a direct answer somewhere on your site, interlinked so engines (and people) can traverse the cluster.

Frequently asked questions

Is AI Mode replacing normal Google search?+

Google runs both today. Adoption is growing, but the classic results page still carries most volume. The sensible strategy optimizes for both at once, which the fundamentals already do.
