What is an AI citation?

An AI citation is when an AI engine names or links your site as a source in its generated answer. Citations come in two flavors: linked citations (a clickable reference to your page) and brand mentions (your name in the answer text). Both drive visibility; only one drives clicks.

Why citations are the new ranking

In a synthesized answer there is no position two through ten; there is cited or invisible. When buyers ask an assistant which tool to use or how to solve a problem, the brands inside that answer inherit the trust the assistant carries. Not being cited is the new not ranking, and it compounds quietly because you never see the answers you were absent from.

What makes a page citable

Direct answers an engine can lift verbatim, specific and dated facts, an unambiguous author and brand entity, and presence in the engine's retrieval set (that is: ranking somewhere for the topic). Community corroboration helps too; engines lean on threads and reviews for experience-type claims, which is why joining the discussions that already rank is a legitimate citation tactic.

Frequently asked questions

Do brand mentions without links matter?+

Yes. A recommendation by name in a ChatGPT answer influences buyers even with no click to attribute. Tracking should count both linked citations and unlinked brand presence.

Can I measure my AI citations?+

Yes, by systematically asking the engines your buyers' questions and logging which sources they cite. SEOcompass automates this across AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity.
